8 Men’s and Women’s Jumpsuits Perfect for Summer

We’re huge fans of jumpsuits and finally, this summer is their time to shine! From the men’s fashion runways of Issey Miyake and Ralph Lauren to Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney’s women’s spring 2019 shows, these all-in-one wonders strutted down the catwalks to our delight.

If you haven’t already joined the jumpsuit club, we completely understand any apprehensions you may have. Jumpsuits have kind of gained a bad reputation due to their association with construction workwear. Let’s be honest, being mistaken for a contractor from the nearest construction site isn’t exactly what most people’s fashion goals are made of. But with a little styling creativity, jumpsuits can be taken from drab to fab in no time.

Traditional vs. Fashion

There are traditional jumpsuits and then there are fashion jumpsuits. Traditionally, jumpsuits are worn over top of clothes to keep the wearer from getting dirty while working at a messy job. They are more function than fashion and can be a bit utilitarian when it comes to shape and design.

On the other hand, fashion jumpsuits take these one-piece garments up a notch by adding design twists that take them to the next level. These twists could be a slimmer and more fitted silhouette, a luxe textile fabrication that moves beyond traditional polyester and cotton (thinks satin, silk or leather), or it could be the addition of a design element such as a hood or an out of the ordinary cut.

We’re fans of both versions, but what we love most about jumpsuits is they make minimal but bold fashion statements without trying too hard while being super comfy at the same time.

Think of a jumpsuit as a monochramatic outfit you can easily layer and dress up or down for any occasion with a few bold or simple accessories, a jacket or a blazer, and dressy or casual footwear. We like dressing them up with a fedora or a beret, a blazer and a pair of chelsea boots. On the contrary, we like dressing them down with baseball caps and our favourite dad sneakers.

Regardless of occasion, your jumpsuit should always be the star of your look and anything additional you wear should complement it without overshadowing.

How to Shop the Perfect Jumpsuit

For jumpsuit novices, pick one in black or a solid neutral colour (this will make it easier to accessorize and pair with other items already in your closet) that is fitted around your waist so you have some shape around your midsection and in your rear. We know boxy and oversized is still a thing, but save it for your sweatshirts and T-shirts.

It’s also important that the length of your torso and upper body fit in the jumpsuit and that you aren’t tripping over any fabric when you walk. You should be comfortable sitting down and there shouldn’t be any uncomfortable pulling in your crotch area — if there is then you’ll need the next size up.

If you’re shorter, go for a jumpsuit with short sleeves and one with pant legs that fall above your ankle (alternatively you could also taper roll up the legs); breaking up the proportion of the jumpsuit will make you look taller.

Fit is key because jumpsuits can be unforgiving depending on the cut, so make sure you try it on. But most importantly, find one that flatters in all the right places and one you feel comfortable in.
