Make your Sunday festive on the colourful trajineras cruising the canals of Xochimilco, Mexico City. Make sure you sample the delicious local eats and refreshing bevies from the vendors floating by. We took it up a notch and hired a band of mariachis for a birthday serenade for our friend, Beverly!
What we love is the mood. It is always lively here, bustling with tourists and locals alike. As an FYI, the boat ride is typically an hour or two. Here is a snapshot of our afternoon on this highly recommended day trip to Xochimilco, Mexico City!

Xochimilco is all about the colours of the trajineras — the large gondola-like boats.
There are so many colourful options to choose from. Each trajinera is brightly decorated, are also named. Each one can carry up to 20-25 passengers. We ended up choosing one with a name we liked.
Oh hello, Rosa Maria! We found our ride. The name is dramatic like a character in a telenovela. We love the neon yellow and neon pink, with a name to match. She evoked a certain telenovela drama that matched our mood!
Xochimilco is also about the flavours! Have some spicy Elotes with your Micheladas.
The fun part of the ride was checking out and haggling with the different food and souvenir vendors floating by. If you want a little kick for your lunch, order some of the delicious Elotes (grilled corn) that come served with a signature cheesy chilli and lime sauce from the floating vendors!
A Michelada is essentially a drink made from beer, tomato juice, lime juice, assorted spices and chilli peppers. It’s often described as a Bloody Mary made with beer instead of vodka. What we also loved was the generous servings which helped beat the heat on this Sunday afternoon!
Make Sunday a fun day and hire a band of mariachis for a Mexican serenade.
You will immediately feel the festive air the moment you get to the town. Xochimilco is popular not just with tourists, but with the locals as well. Sundays are typically the busiest day here. We encourage you to take it up a notch with a serenade by a band of mariachis to celebrate the moment!
