The neon fashion of today is all about working it into your everyday wardrobe. Be brave! Though this time around, the trend moves beyond the gym and festival circuit. Designer and style maker, Demna Gvasalia of Vetements & Balenciaga has been highlighting electric colours in his collections seasons before the fashion pack caught on. Neon green is everywhere still on the runways. The colour made a splash in fall 2018 on runways like Balmain and continued on to big brands such as Margiela this spring/summer season.
This trend is finally hitting the high street hard for Spring/Summer 2019. And neon colours will continue into fall/winter 2020 at Off-White and Carolina Herrera, with the best showing at the discotheque-themed Saint Laurent show. STOP if you think it’s only for the 20-something-year-olds. You have lived enough to know you can smartly do it with class. Here are FIVE easy ways to wear neon and own it!
1. Build It Ground Up with Neon Shoes
The first way to get your feet wet in the neon trend is to take a cue from one of our favourite style bloggers, granola_lane. She simply adds neon to her go-to footwear style. Start reimagining your favourite shoes in neon or even with neon details. So remember, the next time you add-to-cart to first dream in neon — no matter how big or small!
2. Spice Up Monochromatic Looks with Neon Accessories
Many of us are creatures of habit. We love our uniforms in black and grey, and maybe light neutrals in warmer weather. We do tend to wear the same pieces despite what we have hanging in our closets. The simple addition of a bag or belt in neon will easily and effortlessly update your wardrobe.
3. Electrify the Animal within
Next up, tap into the animal print trend. There is nothing more fun than animal print in neon. Chances are, most of us have faux snake skin or some other animal prints in our closets. Let’s step it up and embrace animal prints with some fluorescent green or yellow. European Instagrammer Betty Closter does it flawlessly with a faux neon snake skin purse with a pair of neon coloured socks. Accessories are the best way to start electrifying your wardrobe. We’re actually shopping around for a neon scarf as we write this post!
4. Give Neon a Try with High Street Brands
Although neon is a trend and there are multiple options readily available, start with more affordable options you can find at high street stores. You can stick to your favourite wardrobe items (leggings, dresses, T-shirts, etc.) but add animal print or polka dots in neon green or yellow into the mix. So the next time you are on a mental break at work and perusing your favourite online retailer, try typing “neon green” into the search. The key is to reimagine your favourite looks in neon green in varying degrees based on your comfort level. This mindset will help you work the colour into your wardrobe with maximum ease. Check out some of our favourite neon options below to add the perfect pop of colour to your looks this season.
5. Neon is Green and More
The neon leopard dress from simons.ca (see above) was our way of showing you how to effortlessly go all-in with this colour. Start thinking of it as just another bold colour that you can easily layer with a jacket. As you explore this shade of neon, also consider out neon orange and neon pink — colours which recently appeared in the Fall 2019 shows at Jacquemus, Gucci, and Fashion East. We’re personally starting to lean towards neon pink as it is so close to fuschia and the incredible Schiaparelli pink.
Five Smart Ways to get Neon Chic
We hope these five ways will help you smartly infuse neon into your everyday wardrobe. A great way to start is with a pair of shoes that are neon. You can also accessorize your monochromatic uniform with some neon accessories. And if you like prints, rethink your favourite print in neon. Remember, you don’t have to break the bank and explore high street stores to update your look with affordable neon fashion pieces.
