“Target is known for (their) design for the masses, and we are all a part of the masses on different levels. I like to think of us as superheroes and heroines … You have that quick change at work in the bathroom stall and reveal yourself as ready to take on the night.” Phillip Lim

Target has been doing designer collaborations since 1999

We simply love how Target makes design accessible to the masses. Our favourite retailer has been leading the retail pack with over 175 designer collaborations for the past 20 years. This upcoming collection is to commemorate the 20 years of design partnerships. Some of our favourite past collections were with Thom Browne, Zac Posen, Phillip Lim, Missoni and of course the French design genius, Philippe Starck. He is the one who brought us the ubiquitous plastic Ghost chair, amongst other things. Also, I am hoping to get my hands on some Stephen Sprouse. Sprouse’s collection with Target was wildly successful as it followed soon after his collaboration with Louis Vuitton. Even though I am still lusting for the Sprouse’s graffiti-covered LV keepall, this re-issue will undoubtedly do the trick for me.

Sprouse designed the original line of red, white, and blue clothing and accessories with “USA” written on everything in graffiti print. The designer who had lost a friend in one of the planes that crashed on 9/11, felt an uncharacteristic surge of patriotism.
“I hope people won’t misinterpret me.” Stephen Sprouse

Designer collaborations make LIFE not so basic

Designer collaborations are well-loved here at TRRYWRLD as they are the perfect way to bring more amazing designs to our lives. Like many, we go through insane lengths to get hold of the pieces. It can be through our press contacts or even early line-ups. But we have also made road-trips during our hunts. I remember my first time, leaving the city for the burbs in upstate New York to get my hands on Target’s first designer collaboration. To this day, I am still using some of Michael Graves’ kitchen utensils. There have since been more collaboration additions in my closet, around my house and even my workspace!

Our Target designer collaboration love story!

“Design helps create a space that inspires me! I love my Graves’ Gooseneck Lamp and Starck’s penholder which includes a holder for a flower! Here in this picture, I also happen to be wearing my go-to blazer from Target x Thom Browne!”

“My kitchen and cleaning closet have quite a few designer collaboration pieces from Target. What takes the cake is this two-tier melamine serving tray from Target x Missoni. What I love is that it has the perfect balance of form and function! Additionally, it is so Missoni with the colours, the zig-zags and the pattern mix!! A the same time, it is super durable and easy to clean!”

Most important, the limited-edition anniversary re-issue will drop on September 14 in stores and online. Based on our past experiences, you will likely have to visit different stores as each one will carry varied merchandise. Sadly for Canadians, you will have to cross the border to shop this collection.

5. Key pieces that intrigue us

Below are pieces that intrigue us from some of the returning designers. Aug 15 Midday Update: the collection is available for preview on the target.com. BUT remember to watch the trailer of the upcoming Design For All, a micro-documentary series at the end of this!

The Target designer collaboration re-issue could not be more timely as I am looking to refresh my place. So Marimekko, Missoni, Starck and Michael Graves will be on my radar first. Plus, I really want the skateboard from Stephen Sprouse. We hope we’ve gotten you as excited as we are. Tell us which designer you are most stoked about? In the meantime, Target is also releasing a docu-series, Design for All, on Sept 4. Check out the trailer below to get even more inspired!
